4Great bike for the neighborhood and park
By C. Rollins
My husband bought this bike for me for mother's day and I love it. I like the wide wheels and the ease of use. I can keep up with my kids in the park and in the neighborhood and the gear shifts are easy to use. It also doesn't hurt my back like other bikes where you have to hunch over more. The seat can use a little more cushioning, but otherwise it is a great bike.

4the best womens MTB for $200
By E. Myers
we searched far and wide for a new bike for my daughter. shopped the local bike shop first. i was terribly disappointed to see $389+ for heavy trek and specialized brand chinese made bikes with generic brand components. that's NOT going happen at ALL. i love my local bike shop, but unless they carry a higher quality product... they're not getting my money. bikes in the $350-450 price range use to have air sprung forks, dual wall rims, shimano deore DX or LX components and quality non-threaded headsets. those days are, apparently, long gone.

i happened on the SX2000 at a local one-stop-shop store, Meijer. identical components as the treks and specializeds at the LBS, still made in china, SRAM 3.0 shifters, identical SR suntour front fork. all this, was for $199+ tax. that's nearly half the price! local bike shop, take note!

now... the big advantage for the SX2000 over the "major" brand bikes.... a noticeably lighter aluminum frame. this is a fine bicycle for the casual rider for both street and dirt use and I expect will serve my daughter well for many years. everything is upgradeable if my daughter decides to take MTBing more seriously, like her dad.

in reference to the prior reviewer noting a frame error, where the front wheel hits the pedal...

this must have been an isolated incident. there is at least 6" between the pedal, fully forward and the front tire with the handle bars turned as close to the pedal as possible.

5Excellent Bike
By kohakuhoshi
Most comfortable bike I have ever had. The price and shipping is great, the packaging is excellent. If you're having issues with the wheel hitting the pedals, you have to adjust the "camber" so that the wheel is angled outward, the earlier reviews are unfair if you take into account that they had to put it a certain way to fit it in the box and you have to adjust it yourself. I love the women-specific design of this bike. I hated how awful my old bike was on my back and butt, this new one was almost worth the old one getting stolen. They can have that back straining thing. Be sure to get a theft resistant u-bar lock and a specialty seat, I got the one recommended with this bike and it's sooooo much better.

5Good Mountain Bike;Bargain at $150
By cdog
This is a good bike - the best feature is the dual suspension. Light and easy dropping off curbs on the way to work - huge difference from my hardtail mountain bike.

Disc brakes are nice to have, on front and rear - work much better than rim brakes. To adjust them hold the brake lever in and tighten them down via a hex wrench on the opposite center of the disc brake until the pads are flush against the disc, then turn back until the brake lever has enough play in it.

The rims are v-shaped, and narrow - much more so than my other bikes. It was quite a job to add tuffy liners to to the tires. I think I will have a bike shop change the tire next time they need it. The hard part is getting the tire off and on those narrow rims. The people at REI said to squeeze on the sides of the tire as you put it on, so both ends go deep into the rim.

Be careful when you put the front tire on that you have the fork facing forward. (I had it backward s the first time). Make sure the big round points on U part of the fork point towards the front of the bike.

The tires are very knobby. If you ride on the street a lot you might want to change them to something with a smoother tread in the middle.

The bike weighs 38 pounds put together - not exactly light, but since I ride for pleasure and exercise, and don't plan to race, the weight is fine.

If you get it for less than 150, (what Amazon is selling it for the week of Feb 20), it is quite a bargain. (disc brakes by themselves often add $100 to a bike).

I raised the seat pretty high for a comfortable ride at my height, and found the handlebars are two low. I fixed this by adding some handlebar extenders which allow me to be more upright when I am not braking.

To my knowledge you can't raise the stem on the handlebars without adding a spacer. If anyone finds out otherwise, please comment to this post.

Anot her possibility (besides handlebar extensions), would be to replace the handlebar with one that has more of a rise to it.

The Topkick is made by Kent Bicycle Company for GMC. They also make some Cadillac Mountain Bikes - the Cadillac AM2.4 and AM2.7, which are sold on Amazon. They are both dual suspension with disc brakes and have a very similar frame as the Topkick. Both bikes sale for over $1000.

4A Good Reintroduction to Bikes
By F. Moreau
I purchased this bike in February of 2009. I was looking for something to improve my cardio health but wasn't sure that I would really enjoy biking. After seeing numerous ads in the online classifieds of nearly new $1000 to $2000 bikes being sold for substantial discounts after being ridden for only a few miles, I decided to err towards caution in my initial purchase. I was hoping that by purchasing a mid priced bike I should get a reasonable quality components and not be deterred by a low quality bike. Assembly was basic requiring me to attach the front wheel, handlebar, pedals and seat. Everything else was preassembled. Pretty simple really. Inflate the tires and in 45 minutes it was ready to ride.

I am 58 and live in the mountains in the Pacific Northwest so I was looking for a full suspension bike, mostly to ease the shocks and jolts from riding on bumpy chip sealed roads. Since I was looking for a bike for exercise, weight of the bike was not a huge factor to me.

Having not owned a bike since my 20s, I was unfamiliar with the improvements in cycling. The 21 speeds seemed a bit of overkill to me at first, but now I find it well worth having in the rolling hills in my area. The push button indexed shifters were a real treat to me and easy to learn. The rear derailleur shifted extremely smoothly with no jumps clicks or clatters especially in the upshift. It simply changed ratio and I could feel a little extra resistance in the pedals as I gained speed. The front derailleur is a little less sophisticated but it works adequately. The disk brakes are a good idea in the wet region I live because they are far less likely to lose effectiveness due to getting wet. I remember rim brakes that would become almost ineffectual after riding through a large puddle. My only complaint would be the squealing noise they make at the end of a stop.

On flat roads the gearing is adequate to allow me to pedal along at 22+ mph until my legs tire, but it isn't designed to be a race bike. I have climbed some rather challenging but short hills (total of about 400' gain over a mile and a quarter) and pedaling like mad, I can climb a 12% short grade at 4.8 mph. The bike is heavy, approximately 37 pounds so it makes the hills a little more challenging. Over varied terrain on paved roads I can routinely average around 14 mph. Going down the above series of grades I have coasted up to 38 mph.

The only things I have found to be problematic are that as the bike breaks in, the cables stretch a little so the shifters need to be adjusted after a 100 or so miles. (Common on all bikes) The inner tube in the rear wheel failed at about 130 miles when the joint around the valve gave out while I was off the bike taking a photo. That brings me to a second problem, the tubes. Because of the deep V rims (which makes them stronger) they require a long schrader valve tube. Department stores carry the standard size but not the 48mm valved tubed this bike requires. I would recommend that anyone buying this bike order a couple of 26 x 1.9/2.125 48mm valved tubes at the same time.

The bike is fun to ride and so far, after over 700 miles, it seems very durable. The only problems were the aforementioned inner tube and derailleur adjustments. The seat isn't the best either, but unless you ride more than 30 minutes at a time it will do. The only changes I have done is to replace the saddle with a male gel saddle (I sometimes ride for two hours or more at a time), added a couple of lights for safety, a bike computer, a clamp to the seat post carrier rack (a cheap and effective dual purpose rear fender), and replaced the knobby off road tires with a smoother tire designed for pavement for lower rolling resistance.

Overall I am very pleased with the bike. The bike is good quality especially for the price. I have recently been test riding some higher end bikes and the only difference is that they are are significantly lighter and significantly more expensive. I would have no problem recommending the bike to anyone.

4Excellent bike for its price!
By UART
Phenomenal bike! That is all I can say, especially for the price. Ideal for casual riding. This bike however came with instructions and was purchased from Dunhams in Michigan for about $200.00.

Pros: Stylish, Appealing, both aluminum and steel build, and the full strut suspension system gives it a comfortable ride. Disc brakes are very nice, too!

Cons: (applied to stock build only) After long rides the pedal-bearing hub assembly becomes tightened, very difficult to pedal forward until you reverse-pedal. The rims are too narrow and the high knobs will cause the tire to twist making it difficult to ride sideways on concrete slopes at 45 degree angles or more, The rear suspension system makes is difficult to buy accessories such as a rear tray or basket, The rear derailleur causes the chain to "jump" only during high speed/heavy torque conditions (rear derailleur=7 front=3)

Overall: BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. It's a beautiful bike that grabs al ot of attention everywhere I go.

Facts: I am solid, 200lbs 5'10" from Michigan, Ride bikes an average of 4hrs/day, in harsh climates/terrains, (Mich. area) and daily commuting 7 days/week. I'm tough on bikes, and haul groceries with my trailer attached to it.

(good job, GMC/Kent bikes)

4Good Mountain Bike.
By M. Hernandez
I bought the XR200 last year and I've put a few dozen miles on the bike, through moderately rough terrain and it's held up well. The rear suspension was a bit of overkill for me as I'm not riding rugged downhill slopes (yet) but I'd rather have it & not need it now than need it & not have it later. I like that the rear suspension's rigidity can be easily adjusted with the turn of a steel ring, that's prevented from slipping by another ring that sits behind it. I've never owned a bike with a disc brake so I find that pretty cool (the XR200 shown here has a front caliper brake however). I bought the bike in white resulting in more noticeable scratches, dings, dents & dirt but overall it's a good-looking bicycle. The gear shift is built into the grips, I've accidentally shifted while riding but that's hardly a design flaw, I just need to get accustomed to the bike. My only complaint is cosmetic, the welds aren't clean, they appear sloppy but I managed to carefully clean the m up w/ a rotary tool & grinding stone then repainted the areas. Time will tell if this bike is as durable as my old-school freestyle Mongooses (Mongeese?)...lol

3Looks nice, rides well, but heavy.
By Roughdraft214
I took the bike for a 14 mile ride to hit some trails, as I just purchased it. Out of the box it weighed right around 42 lbs. I changed the pedals, added some toe clips, changed the seat and took off the kickstand, and it now weighs 37.6 lbs., still very heavy for steep inclines. I had trouble getting it to the top of each steep incline I encountered and I felt it to be slow in sandy and lose terrain (which lead me to change the tires, they are currently on order.) I am hoping this will bring down the weight by about 2-4 more pounds.

For easy trails this bike is fine. There are very few bikes you can buy with front shocks and a front disc brake for under $200 so this is a good choice for someone just starting to get into mountain biking but there are other options out there if you look around. I am already making plans to change the frame. Dual suspension bikes just seem to weigh a lot.

There is some assembly required, nothing too strenuous, I think I put mine together in about 30 minutes. Make sure to tighten the handle bars well, mine came loose a little, even after I had tightened them well, but that was while traveling over rough terrain. I also tightened my brakes after the first ride. This helps for quick reaction turns, just be careful slamming on the front brakes, disc brakes seem to grab well and they can send you flying over the handle bars.

If you want to go as cheap as possible, this is a good choice. Otherwise, spend the extra $100 and get a lighter bike with front shocks and front and rear disc brakes, that weighs under 30 lbs. If you change the tires, you've got a good road bike, otherwise it might have a little bit of a sluggish ride and lack good cornering maneuvers.

4Great bike for beginners!!!
By A. Momjyan
I am new to MTB, and this bike truly helps me practice, exercise, and develop the skills. With the right adjustments (and yes, you do need to take it to a shop for a professional adjustment if you don't really know how to do it yourself), it provides for smooth shifting, great breaking, and overall enjoyable ride, whether on the road or off-road. The only item that would require an upgrade is the crank set, so get ready to spend another $100 - $150 on a decent crank set to enjoy the 100% potential of the bike!

Product Description

What is a Recoil? The dictionary defines recoil as "to spring or come back; react." The Diamondback Recoil takes that definition to heart. Whether it is flying down the wide open trail or making its way through twisty tight single track, the Recoil 29 will react to what is under its tires and then spring back and be ready to take on what comes next. What’s next?: 29ers. The larger diameter wheel is taking over, and with good reason. The Recoil 29 is the perfect beginner bike for those just getting into aggressive riding or those who are looking for an entry level full suspension rig. The foundation for this is firmly laid with an all-new 6061 T-6 Aluminum Trail frame sporting 4" of travel via the Tuff Shock Rear Coil Shock w/ oil Damping. The frame uses a machine formed top tube and a butted and formed down tube sharing tubing from our nicer Sortie series. It uses a sealed cartridge bearing pivot and is built around an optimized single pivot design which is the sim plest type of rear suspension because there are few moving parts. It consists of a pivot just above the bottom bracket, slightly up on the down tube and a single swingarm to the rear axle. Being that the rear triangle directly attaches to the rear shock, the shock has a more linear spring rate and offers good small bump compliance. Larger wheels are not the only goodies on this beast, We've added a SR XCT 100mm travel fork w/external preload adj. The Shimano SL-M310 Rapidfire 8-speed shifters control an Altus front and an Acera rear derailleur and the HG31 8spd Cassette (11-32t) combined with the SR Suntour XCC T202 crankset ( 24/34/42t) give you 24 mountain crushing gears to choose from. The Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes with 6" rotors will provide all of the breaking power that you’ll need and the Weinmann SL-7 Doublewall wheelset will provide a tough and stable platform for your bike to roll on.

5Great bike for the price.
By D. Robie
You cannot beat this bicycle for the price. It is actually fabricated in the same overseas factories that Giant builds their frames. It also is the same as the entry-level Chinese-imported Trek frame.

As for Mrs. Roberts and her problems......hate to say it, but each and every problem/symptom you described is a symptom/problem indicating a poor assembly and adjustment. You should have taken the bike(s) to a professional bicycle shop and had the mechanic there do a tune-up on your bike....all those problems would and could have been avoided completely. Chain shifting problems, chain-drop and jamming, wheel loose....all adjustment and assembley problems.

Why do I say this? I was a bike mechanic for approx. 7 years and saw many, many bicycles bought from mass-market merchandisers and over the internet with the same exact problems after the poor or unskilled assembly. Even the bikes the "real" bike shops get have to be assembled and adjusted before they are sold. So, please don't blame the bicycle as being defective, blame the root cause.....the poor assembly and unskilled adjustment of the bicycles.

5Great Bike
By Jeremy Hixson
I searched for my wife a bike and everywhere I went, the price was way more than what I wanted to pay. I wanted a bike that was well constructed, lite, and has high rated parts on it. I found this bike and I compared the price with a comparable bike at a bike shop and it was nearly $100 cheaper, plus free shipping. After we received the bike, we were very satisfied of the product except for the seat, but you can purchase a nice gel seat for around $15. Great deal!

4Bike is nice though did need some adjustments
By Just Me
I really like this bike...it is a great little starter 'road' bike. It can take some rougher terrain, but I wouldn't take it off roading constantly. I don't think it's built to tolerate a whole lot of that. After assembling the bike we did take it to our local bike shop and spent $10 on getting it adjusted just right...the gears weren't shifting right from lower 4th and 5th. They were getting hung up a little, but the shop fixed that right up. Seems something was bent a little. I also had the brakes adjusted as they were riding the rims of the wheels and they definitely weren't supposed to be that close! Nice bike for the price though and free shipping! Can't beat it!

5FANTASTIC BUY
By Dr. Edward F. Mclaughlin
I bought this bike because it has great qualities for cheap. I knew that for the price that there had to be some things wrong with it, but I wanted the important features to be good. This is a very sturdy bike and I have had a great time riding it. For the cost, there is no bike better. I paid 278 on amazon with free shipping and everything. The bike is very easy to put together. I do suggest you get it tuned by a professional, however, because it took me a long time to tinker with the settings to make it run smoothly. I am very happy with everything about this bike, but there are a few things that may go undescribed.

1-The wheels are of very poor quality. The rubber seems really fake and if you are on concrete they skid out easily and leave a lot of rubber behind.

2-There is no place to put a water bottle holder or a hand pump. The rear suspension connects to the bottom bar of the frame and just under the top bar are the cables so there is no place to store a bottle or pump.

3-The front fork and suspension are difficult to adjust. (I havent been able to adjust the suspension yet)

4-Tuning involved: front and rear derailleurs, brakes, straightening the disc break, wheel adjustment.

I am giving the negatives because they are not described by anyone else and they are important to know, but I cant describe how happy I am with the bike. I am 6'0" and it fits me very well. The parts are very durable and when you get everything tuned up nicely, the bike runs just fine!

I HIGHLY suggest this bike to anyone who is looking for a deal on a mountain bike.

5To answer some questions about the bike.
By B.Taylor III
I bought the bike at the beginning of June 2011. These are my thoughts and may help you.

Short and simple.. an alright big box bike(idealy for someone 160#s or less), and at least it's not a bicycle shape'd object. Schwinn is owned by a company known as Pacific cycle company, made in China. With that out of the way... It's better than a 'mart bike.

1.) The shifters are decent, shimano entry level quality.

2.) A few things that everyone askes, what is the weight? The box it ships in weighs more than the bike, the bike IIRC weighed about 32-36#s.

3.) Front and Rear Derailluers are pretty good. Take the bike to a LBS(Local Bike Shop) for adjustments if you feel that adjusting it is over-welming. I adjusted mine, set the H/L limits shifters worked perfectly. Although I understand that adjustments are not easy for everyone, so if it seems too much LBS's will help you get it on the road/trail.

4.) I found it to be a common review problem that the front rotor disc was warped. I own a Park Tool Rotor Truing Fork - DT-2C , that you'll need anyways (5-10bucks) pick up one from a LBS or Amazon for a little more, to true the warped rotor. This tool will save you money instead of having to buy a new rotor.

5.) The coilover (rear shock) on mine had a blown dampener, shockeye lenght is 6.5 inches BTW. I bought a aftermarket coilover for it, no more boing-gy. SR Suntour front fork is entry level and was frustrating on a uphill climb (NO Lockout) and rode pleasently otherwise, not just for looks.

6.) 26" wheels are light, and the spokes needed major tightening. Shr valves. F/R has V-brake surfaces machined on them and can be "handed-down" to your kids 26er' if they don't have disc brakes. Tires have a waxy coating to keep mud from sticking, that wears off the nubies as you ride. The tires are fairly aggressive too.

7.) The cassette (Rear sprocket) seems stout. I'm 240#s p ulling an extra 70#s no catastrophic failure as some mentioned but YMMV.

8.) Rear swingarm has a mount for disc brake. I used the front caliper mounting bracket to mount a caliper on the the rear. You will need another rear wheel that is compatible with disc brakes.

9.) The seatpost is alloy, and 27.2mm not 25.4mm as Schwinn states. This seatpost uses a hex-key to adjust angle.

10.) 1 1/8" threadless stearer tube with typical big-box-bike headset. Lightweight stem and handlebar aswell.

11.) Seat is like a rock, but who sits on a MTB seat?

If you are not too critical on the bike, this is a great bike for a growing kid or someone looking for a entry level full suspension bike. I am happy with it, and would give 4.5 stars to this bike.

First off, I'd like to say that I never write reviews, yet I order from Amazon Prime constantly! I had to take the time to review this bike though. I was skeptical ordering a bicycle from the internet (like you might be too) but with an Amazon Prime membership, overnight shipping was $3.99, I had to jump on it. The bike arrived in perfect condition, packaged extremely well and 90% assembled! It takes more time to unpack it then get it up and running and I know nothing about bicycles other than how to ride.

What you must assemble:
- Screw the Pedals on (make sure you do L on left and R on right) - this was really, really easy.

- Screw the handlebars on (shifters are already on it) (easy)

- Put a little locking pole through the front tire (keep pushing if it's a little tough) and place the tire on the frame.

That's about it! It's really easy. I recommend taking it to a bike shop for a tune-up to make sure everything is tight and the gears shift good and brakes are aligned (cost me $50).

Pro riders will criticize this as a "department store" bike but trust me, if you are a casual rider that wants to ride on the streets and some light off-road, this bike is great. The quality is great, it's comfortable, the brakes are amazing and to top it off, it looks AWESOME!

I am a 28 year old, 200lbs, 5' 10" male and I'm comfortable on it (though I had to order a new seat Velo Bio:Logic Bicycle Saddle the one that comes on it is a bit hard but that's just my opinion).

Looks like the price has gone up a bit since some of the other reviewers have bought it (maybe due to demand) but it's worth the $300 for sure. Very fun, great quality, nice looking bike. I recommend buying from Amazon, I had it the next day by noon and in 100% perfect condition!

5Awesome Experience with this Bike!
By Beverly75
So after reading a couple of reviews for this bike, I was worried about what the set-up would be like. I can honestly say it was a joyful experience for me! I had no trouble whatsoever- in fact, and I don't recommend this, but...I didn't even need the instruction manual. All you do is pop the handlebars into place and set it to the appropriate height and tighten with an Allen wrench...put the front wheel on, TOTALLY self-explanatory, and screw on the peddles. I did need to adjust the front disc brake, easily achievable with the dial provided, and also adjust the handles, also easily done with allen wrench. I am not a mechanically savy person but this was a piece of cake. The bike is beautiful and is a very smooth ride. I couldn't be happier!

1Beware of the Return policy!
By Dan
I bought this bike for my wife and the seat height was too tall. I requested a return through Amazon. Unfortunately for me I did not research the return policy before buying the bike. Well, the seller, OJcommerce responded with a return authorization. In which it stated I must return the bike to CA at my cost, and there would be a 30% restocking fee. The shipping, OK but the 30% is very steep and was not mentioned in the original Amazon listing. By the time I ship the bike from my home in FL and loose the 30% resotcking fee, I will have lost about 50% of what I paid for the bike. If I would have know this up front I would not have bought the bike. Bottom line, I'm not returning the bike but will try to sell it locally and will probably recover more than if I returned it to the seller. That is not good customer service in my opinion.

4If you change the seat the bike is perfect!
By B. Nieves in NYC
Darn that seat was so uncomfortable! I was in pain for about a week and a half! lololol When I peddled the bike and stood up on the peddles the ride was perfect! I went and purchased a new seat the next day and the bike is now perfection! Rides like a dream! On the second run I took it for a ride in the woods. Up and down hills with no problem....in the mud...no slipping....able to shift gears smoothly....no problems at all with it! Including that everyone's eyes were on the bike offering lots of compliments on how nice it looks! Great bike...Oh I forgot to add that I added a child trailer hitch to it and pulled along my 5 year old so smooth I forgot he was back there ( dont know yet whether that is good or bad) but my baby boy enjoyed the ride! Go for it....great purchase just be ready to change the seat!

I just wanted to add that ordering from Amazon is always a pleasure! Ordered the bike online and was shipped within 2 days....free shipping btw...save d me a nice amount of money on that! Love Love Love Amazon!

1Mantis Colossus Mountain Bike
By Don E. Goike
May the buy beware... mine came damaged. Seems that I got one the was a return because the tie wraps were cut. Amazon seem to have poor quality control on stuff that is damage in shipping and or defective and doesn't take that product out of the pipe line. I had the same problem with a smoker I bought last year. I didn't send that one back because of the box was destroyed and the size of the product. I did send the bike back , the wheel was bent, the smoker had many dent but was functional as a smoker not pretty to look at but worked. I asked for at lease a 10% discount on the smoker but no luck . I have had no good luck with big idem on Amazon. Never again will I buy large items... As far a the bike it was american made which I liked and seem to be made well just never got the chance to ride it. And yes I know this may not be the spot to write this but maybe Amazon will clean up their act.

5Good 29 inch mountain bike
By Ty
Although I rated this bike 5 stars, I feel obligated to mention that it arrived in poor condition. Amazon asks that shipping reviews be submitted through a different feedback system, buy I feel that it should be addressed within the overall review being that it is something that I considered carefully before making my purchase (shipping such a large item). Overall, to include the condition in which it arrived, I would give this product a rating of 3 stars due to the fact that the box arrived severly managled and the rear gear shifft mount was bent to the point that it would not shift properly. I was able to bend the shifter mount back to its correct position, but I feel like it should have been better protected/handled during shipping. Aside from that, I would recommend this bike for anyone looking to start riding again.

5A few bike issues, but DB coming through to get issues resolved!
By Volker72
I had written a long review about some issues I had with the bike. I said I would send in an update after I spoke to DB today.

Here is the quick recap of my first review:

1) DB could do a better job packaging by adding some sort of cushioning packaging material. May be the cause of the wheel issues below.
2) My front wheel was very untrue
3) My back wheel was slightly untrue (to the point where if this had been the only issue I would have just lived with it)
4) I was shipped the wrong pedals (resin instead of the metal pedals spec'ed on the DB and Amazon website)

Update:

I just spoke to Jason at DB. He called a couple local dealers and got one to true up the wheels at no cost (to me anyway). I'm really happy about this. I was was hoping I wouldn't have to ship parts back and forth to get this issue resolved. I plan on taking it in this afternoon.

I noted to Jason that I got the wrong pedals. He sa id the specs are subject to change. I understand that, but the spec's then need to be changed on the websites (Amazon and DB). Don't downgrade a part and still spec out the previously better part. However, at the end of the day we are talking about me getting a $10 resin pedal over a $15 metal pedal, neither of which I really want. I've already ordered the DB sound pedal as an upgrade and I would have done so if I had gotten the pedal I was supposed to. I noted it more for the principal of the thing.

The bike is more assembled out of the box than I would have thought (I've never bought a bike online before). It was just about ready to go except the handlebars and front tire are removed and zip tied to the frame. After getting those on you just need to tune the breaks and the derailer and its ready to go. I've never done this before but it wasn't too bad. There are also how to videos online showing customers how to setup a mail order bike if needed (third party sites, not the DB site).

I really like this bike. It is much lighter than my 8 yr old Trek 4300, even with the bigger tires. I've not done any real riding with it yet (as I need to take the front tire in to get fixed first) but just riding it up and down the street I can tell like size size of the 29 in wheels. The reviews I read about the front suspension did turn out to be true, they give more than I'd like even if you tighten them all the way.

As long as it holds up this will be considered a great buy.

Happy Riding!

Update 10-8-12:

Went to the local DB dealer that DB customer service set me up with. They got the tire issue resolved and went above and beyond fine tuning it for me. Made me feel bad I did not buy from them, but to be fair I did look at their store and they did not carry the 22" size I wanted.

Updated 10-20-12:

Found that using a pair of pliers to tighten the front suspens ion has helped a lot. I thought I had tightened it all the way by hand, but after using a small amount of pressure using a pair of pliers it was not as close to being fully tightened as I thought. Much better now. Very similar to the way may Trek 4300 front suspension feels.

5HUGE BANG FOR THE $$$!!!!!!!!!!!
By DanOnABike
After reading reviews for weeks on all the 29ers out there, i decided to give the Diamondback Overdrive V a shot. I am new to mountain biking. That being said, this bike is amazing. It feels very powerful. The upsized 29" wheels feel like they can take anything you throw at them. Assembly is extremely easy. I also love that Diamondback uses the same frame throughout the Overdrive line, so the pro model has the same frame as the V. I also love that even though the V comes with cantilever brakes, it has the mounts for disc brakes giving the option to upgrade later. Really the only drawback is that Diamondbacks warranty DOES NOT COVER any bike delivered to your home in a carton. To me, that's just not right. But, all in all, this bike is an absolute STEAL for the price. My recommendation is that if you are looking for a beginner to novice 29er, this is the bike to get. You just can not beat the quality of a Diamondback for this price.

4Good Buy...
By AC
I decided to return to bicycling after years of running wore out my knees. I'm not in to long distance riding and I wanted something more versatile to handle ragged streets and rough terrain. I received this bike well packaged and without a scratch on the frame. The black paint has a nice satin finish and, with its black rims and spokes, it looks like a shadow floating down the road. It was only a matter of installing the front wheel, take note of the directional tread, and adjusting the brake pads. It came with a set of allen wrenches, which is all you need. The owner's manual can be somewhat confusing and vague but common sense should prevail. I'm 6'2", around 240lbs, and the large size was perfect. The bike's frame is very sturdy and has substantial weight. It took me a few rides to get accustomed to the gears but shifting was smooth and functional. All it takes is a quick click and gears switch. If you hold the shifter one second too long you'll switch multipl e gears. The one thing I didn't expect was having to buy another pump, only about $15, to accomodate the presta valve. The bike looks classic and runs smooth.

Product Description

The bike industry often sees fads come and go. Innovation doesn’t always assure success or even relevance for that matter. But the 29er revolution seems to be one that’s here to stay and for good reason.

There’s no denying the rock crawling, root crushing power of a larger wheel. Making the largest of obstacles the smallest of matters is a defining trait of these muddy beasts. By offering decreased rolling resistance, increased traction when cornering and improved ground clearance, one ride upon one of these massive behemoths is sure to sway even the staunchest skeptic.

Benefits of a 29” Wheel

  • Angle of Attack – Larger wheels decrease your angle of attack by allowing you to roll over obstacles easier and faster. Bigger wheel = smaller obstacle.
  • Momentum – A larger wheel enables one to carry momentum easier though obstacles.
  • Surface Contact – 29”wheels are less prone to sinking in soft material such as sand and mud due to the larger contact patch causing lower ground pressure. The longer contact patch increases cornering and straight line traction
  • Stability – The relative position of the bottom bracket/cranks to the axles in the wheels also means that your relative center of gravity is lower. This results in a feeling of riding “in” the bike rather than on top of it.
  • Tire Clearance – with more tire choices than any platform, the 29”wheel easily accommodates off road as well as commuting tires.
  • Taller Riders – 29" bikes tend to offer taller riders a more “natural” frame geometry.

The Diamondback Overdrive V packs a punch in terms of value and affordability and takes 29ers to a new level. The newly revised 2013 6061-T6 Aluminum Overdrive series frame boasts of n ewly formed top and down tubes, a machined headtube, and forged drop outs with a replaceable derailleur hanger. The matte black finished frame has a look that matches its aggressive trail setup.

The Geometry is spot on—it just feels right. The slightly sloping top tube provides ample standover clearance. A 71° head tube angle and a 73° seat tube angle create the perfect XC/trail geometry. The 390mm (15.4 inch) chainstays equate to an extremely snappy rig and the ability to easily get the front wheel off the ground – something that not all 29ers can be so proud of.

The Overdrive Vis a fantastic entry level 29er well balanced between value and performance. The SR Suntour XCT fork gives you 100mm of travel for the perfect amount of cushion up front. Strong and reliable linear pull brakes keep everything under control, and Shimano shifting puts the perfect gear just a solid click away.

Weinmann SL-7 double wall r ims with WTB Wolverine Comp folding tires mean that not too much is going to slow down this 29er. Diamondback signature alloy handlebars, stem post and Race saddle w/tubular cromo rails round out this package.

The 2013 Overdrive V is an great means of getting into a new 29er. Whether it’s your first 29er, you’re just “testing the waters”, or you want to add a new steed to the stable. The Overdrive V is offered in SM (16"), MD (18"), LG (20"), and XL (22").

4Good Bike, Poor Seller...
By Dylan Pitcairn
I bought the bike in anticipation that it would be in the RED color that was specified. Instead, the package arrived and I was surprised to see a black frame inside. I thought to myself, hmm... strange. At that point, I put the bike together with no hassle really. (I am a bike mechanic, so this is second nature) The only problem was that the front derailler was a bit too small, but a little tweak to enlarge it and everything shifted well. I have to say that I hate Grip Shifters. Just dispise them. I got the bike for my dad and I had a few requirements: Disk Brakes, 29er mountain bike, Shocks, under $300. This fit the details and the price is right.

For my dad, it is enough to get by with for another 10 years. I personally own a recumbent trike (Catrike 700) and this is way lower in quality than my trike, but hey, it isn't the same by any means. The brakes are disks, but I'd rate them to be as strong as rim brakes, a bit spongey at times. I can't lock the rear w heel to skid to a stop if I needed to, so that may have some further investigation into the pads. The chain was super oily and yucky. A rag took care of the excess lube and the shimano gears are fine. I fitted one of our old Cateye systems on the bike to track speed and distance. I can get up to about 20mph, but beyond that, I have to huff and puff.

The seller who sold me the bike was a bit of a laugh. I complained about the color, asking for either a replacement or partial refund on the mistake. All they told me was that this was the "new, better" model and that they lost $45 on the transaction. I had to laugh and wrote them a bad review. Nothing more said.

The bike is good. I have to admit, for the price, it is made from aluminum, and under 35 lbs. The tires are knobby and make a nice rolling sound on pavement. The gears are a bit sloppy and not perfect, but it is a mountain bike with grip shifters, so don't expect perfect crisp shifts. The price is d ead on and assembly is required.

Don't be freaked out by the other reviewers who complain about DIY construction. Face it, if you buy a bike online, you have to put it together and tune it. There isn't another way to do it without buying it in store. Dollar for dollar, it is a deal not worth missing for the mild mountain biker who needs something to ride with. Obviously, the more moderate to hard core will want better componentry and brakes, so you may look elsewhere.

4Nice Bicycle
By James A. Lawrence
This is a very nice bicycle for the money. I would have given it a 5 star except for shipping damage. The box was dinged up from shipping and the parts were able to move around and the front wheel spokes became tangled on the pedal shaft. I had to work on it a bit to get the spoke off without damage. The reflector that was mounted in the spokes was broken adn had fallen off. I did not ask for a new one.

The assembly was quick and easy without reading the directions. After pumping air into the tires the bike was ready to ride. It was a gift for my rather tall 14 year ol, 6' 4" tall and he fit nicely onto the seat.

Very nice bike at a great price.

3The quality corresponds to price
By BoA
The bike is +-ok, but quality of some parts isn't too high: the manufacture uses the cheapest bottom bracket, disk brakes and fork.
- the Zoom disk brakes was installed instead of Promax, and I have strong feeling that Promax should works better;
- the fork works like rigid one;
- the bottom bracket doesn't have enough oil and works very hard.

So, this is the good bike for beginner, who wants to test 29er. But I don't recommend to buy and use this Mongoose as real MTB.
